SPONSORED by the Economics Department and the Woltemade Center, the Blaine E. Grimes Summer Grant Program is available to Ohio Wesleyan students who are Economics, Economics with Management Concentration, International Business, or Accounting majors and are entering their junior or senior years. The purpose of the program is to encourage and support summer internships and activities, especially those related to international or public service programs, that will have an impact on the life of the student participants.

Grants are available for up to $2,000 for the 2008 summer session. Interested students who have identified an appropriate internship or similar experience are encouraged to apply.

The Scholarship

With the kind contribution of Jeff Harris’76, an investor in and board member of Prodesse; and Cynthia Harris ’76, the program was initiated in the summer of 2005 and named in memory of former professor of economics, Dr. Blaine E. Grimes, who taught at Ohio Wesleyan from 1946 until 1988. Lou Simpson ’58, chief executive for capital operations at GEICO, made a $200,000 gift pledge to help make meaningful internship experiences possible.

The Proposal

Applicants must write a 1-2 page letter describing the potential experience. Be sure to explain the project in enough detail for the committee to understand the significance of the experience. If you already have accepted a firm offer of a summer internship, please include a copy of your acceptance letter. If you do not yet have a firm offer, please indicate where you are in the process of applying or being considered for the position. Include a budget that indicates the importance of the grant in your ability to complete the experience.

Judging Criteria

Applications will be evaluated on the basis of the student’s academic record, the quality of the internship or activity, and the impact of the grant on the student’s ability to participate in the summer experience. The evaluation will be made by a committee of Economics Department faculty.

Deadlines

Applications are due Friday, April 11, 2008, and students will be notified of the committee’s decision by the end of April. Applications will be accepted after the deadline as long as funds are available.

Requirements

Your letter of application should be accompanied by:

  • Your résumé
  • A transcript (unofficial)
  • A summary of prior, relevant experience. (or other circumstances that indicate the you are prepared for the experience)

Awardees will be asked to provide a brief report on their experience upon completion of the summer.  In addition, at the annual Blaine Grimes Seminar, they will be asked to give a presentation describing their placement and the impact of the experience, also a summary of expenses is required.
