Corns Business and Entrepreneurial Scholars Recipient

Yashika Shah
Koshaa Corporation: Money Life Magazine and DBS Cholamandalam, Mumbai, India

Yashika ShahThis summer, I had the opportunity to be a member of the Koshaa Corporation family. Koshaa Corporation organizes summer internship programs for students so a student can intern at various institutes related to his major. This in return helps the student get a better understanding of working in the real world. Through the benevolence of the Blaine E Grimes Summer internship program and the internship opportunity offered by Koshaa Corporation, I had the privilege of working with some of the best firms of Mumbai, India.

My internship began with a one-and-a-half month stint at MoneyLife magazine, which is a financial magazine. At this firm, I got the chance to work in the financial editorial department of the magazine. I was assigned to write about the finances of the small-scale business units (SBUs) which have started flourishing in India. I also got to write about the No Net Asset Value (No-NAV) declaration policy of the Indian Mutual Funds during times of stock market hitting the upper circuit. According to this policy, a mutual fund investor cannot make a profit when the stocks of certain companies hit the upper circuit in the bull market. I was also assigned to write about the economies of Mahalaxmi racecourse—a very important landmark and business entity of Mumbai, India.

After working at MoneyLife magazine, Koshaa Corporation assigned me to work at DBS Cholamandalam—a leading Indian mutual fund. I worked in the equities and research department of the mutual fund for a month and was allowed to assist their senior research analyst. At the mutual fund, I learned a lot about how the Indian stock market operated and also about the Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) issued by companies. I was appointed to work at the trading desk and had to help in position and sales trading. I facilitated their senior research analyst in analyzing the movements of the top runners of the market and making detailed reports of the final research sales of the top companies. I got a thorough understanding of the distribution of mutual funds and also about the evolving market structure within the equity trading business through this internship experience.

These internship experiences could not have been successful if it were not for the generosity of the Blaine E. Grimes Summer Grant. This internship program helped me realize that working in the finance sector is what I want to do for the rest of my life. Apart from that, I am also very grateful to the Corns Business and Entrepreneurial Scholarship for making me the prestigious Corns Scholar and helping me fund my education at OWU in a smoother fashion.
